How to Study for A Subject You Don’t Understand

Embarking on the high school journey often feels like navigating uncharted waters. While some subjects may come naturally, others may pose a challenge, leaving us feeling lost and overwhelmed.

I know this struggle all too well — I struggled to understand chemistry and physics in high school. However, I want to reassure you that seeking help and finding effective study strategies can not only make these subjects manageable but can also open doors to incredible opportunities. Study strategies opened doors for me when I got into my dream school, Brown University.

  1. Embrace the Struggle

First and foremost, it’s crucial to understand that struggling with a subject doesn’t mean you’re not smart or capable. In fact many successful individuals, even those at prestigious institutions like Brown, have faced academic challenges.

Embracing the struggle is the first step to overcoming it. I vividly remember the frustration of not grasping certain concepts in science, but it was this struggle that motivated me to seek help and discover effective study techniques that I carried with me into college.

2. Seek Guidance

One of the most impactful decisions I made during my high school journey was reaching out for help. If a subject feels like a foreign language to you, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from your teacher, classmates, or a tutor.

My turning point came when I sought out the help of a chemistry and physics tutor. Having someone there to break down complex concepts and answer my questions made a world of difference.

Tutors can provide personalized support, focusing on your specific needs and helping you build a solid foundation in the subject.

3. Break It Down

When faced with a challenging subject, it’s essential to break it down into manageable parts. Instead of tackling the entire chapter or topic at once, focus on smaller sections.

Create a study plan that allows you to dedicate specific time to each concept or topic. For example, if you’re struggling with chemical reactions, break it down into types of reactions, balancing equations, and reaction mechanisms.

Tackling smaller chunks helps you understand the big picture and makes the material more digestible and less overwhelming.

4. Utilize All of Your Resources

Take advantage of the plethora of resources available to you. Textbooks, online tutorials, educational videos, and interactive simulations can provide different perspectives on the same topic.

Don’t limit yourself to one source; explore various materials to find what resonates with you. In my case, watching YouTube videos on difficult subjects and completing online exercises helped me visualize complex physics concepts. This made them more accessible and easier to understand.

5. Form Study Groups

Studying with peers can be a game-changer. Forming study groups allows you to discuss concepts, ask questions, and gain insights from different perspectives.

I found that explaining a concept to a friend not only reinforced my understanding but also helped me identify areas where I needed further clarification. Collaborative learning also fosters a supportive environment where everyone benefits. And it can make learning more fun!

6. Practice, Practice, Practice

There’s no substitute for practice when it comes to mastering a subject. Work through practice problems, solve equations, and apply concepts to real-world scenarios.

The more you practice a subject you struggle with, the more confident you’ll become in your abilities. Practice not only solidifies your understanding but also prepares you for exams and assessments.

7. Celebrate Small Victories

Throughout your journey studying a challenging subject, celebrate the small victories. Whether it’s understanding a complex concept, acing a quiz, or completing a challenging assignment, acknowledge your progress.

Recognizing your achievements, no matter how big or small, boosts your confidence and motivates you to keep going. Success is a series of small steps. Each step forward is a testament to your dedication and resilience.

In conclusion, studying for a subject you don’t understand is a common challenge, and you are not alone. It’s okay to seek help, to struggle, and to embrace the learning process.

Remember that even those at top schools faced academic hurdles at different points in their journeys. By seeking guidance, breaking down the material, utilizing resources, forming study groups, practicing consistently, and celebrating your victories, you can turn a challenging subject into one of your favorites. Overcoming academic challenges not only shapes you as a student but also prepares you for the rewarding experiences that lie ahead.
